Get ready to ditch your cars and hit the streets on foot or two wheels, folks. Mayor Muriel Bowser, alongside the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), has officially rolled out the plans for this year's Open Streets event. It's set to take over 7th Street NW and will stretch a mile for pedestrians, cyclists, and rollers of all sorts to enjoy an urban playground between E Street NW and Rhode Island Avenue NW. As reported by DDOT, the event is slated for October 5, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will, rain or shine, transform the area into a lively corridor free from the hum of motor vehicles.

Open Streets isn’t just about reclaiming the pavement; its aim is to also improve community connections and provide residents with a tangible taste of healthier, more sustainable modes of transport. DDOT has chosen to generously host a bike giveaway, offering 51 bikes to increase access to alternative transportation options that align with the moveDC goals. Those interested simply need to apply at the event's official website, and with a bit of luck, they could ride away with a brand new bike. Additionally, activities and programming from local businesses and organizations will be sprinkled throughout the event, infusing the day with fitness classes, live music, and more interactive treats.

Local businesses hoping to join the festivities shouldn't snooze; they’ve got until August 30, 2024, to submit the Business Participation Form to secure a spot for outdoor vending or dining. Acting DDOT Director, Sharon Kershbaum, shared in the event's announcement, "We are thrilled to take over 7th Street for this year’s event by offering a fun and safe environment for community members to experience our streets in a whole new way.” With the Mayor's backing, the event aims to plug participants into new businesses, impart wisdom on transportation safety, and literally get people moving together.

For those eager to dive deeper into the event, volunteer opportunities are available. To get all the details, apply for a bike, or sign up as a volunteer, visit the official Open Streets website. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or scooting, make sure you're comfortable and ready to experience 7th Street like never before.
