The Mecklenburg County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), a coalition joining forces across various sectors to address mental health emergencies, recently had several of its members recognized for their standout service. The accolades came courtesy of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) North Carolina, which hosted its inaugural CIT Stars 2024 Awards Luncheon. The event shined a spotlight on individuals who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to navigate the complexities of mental health crises within their community.

Awarded for their remarkable contributions to mental health and safety, four local members of the team were celebrated at the luncheon. Falling into the hands of those dedicated to making a difference, the honors included CIT First Responder of the Year for Kyle Shank of the Charlotte Fire Department and CIT Volunteer of the Year for Joyce Engelmann of NAMI Charlotte. CIT Mental Health Advocate of the Year went to Allison Pastirik of Legacy Bridge Counseling & Consulting, with Dr. Stephen Strzelecki from Mecklenburg County Criminal Justice Services not far behind, seizing the CIT Champion of the Year award. The honorees, recognized in a ceremony attended by their peers and community leaders, represent the tip of the spear in a push toward more compassionate and effective crisis intervention.

Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County's Public Health director, expressed his pride in the CIT's achievements. "We are proud of the 2024 Crisis Intervention Team award recipients for their commitment to promoting and protecting mental health and safety in our community," Washington remarked at the event. He emphasized that the CIT's pioneering teamwork sets a prime example for local initiatives and broader state-level responses to mental health emergencies.

The CIT program intertwines the expertise of law enforcement, first responders, mental health professionals, and advocates. This initiative strives not only to offer immediate help during crises but also to weave a safety net to support individuals struggling with mental health issues. The community's appreciation was palpable as these four CIT award winners, united by a common goal, were recognized for their pivotal roles in fostering such an environment. Their accolades serve as a testament to their commitment and a beacon for other communities striving to improve mental health crisis intervention.
