Reflecting on a century's struggle for gender equality, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed August 26 as Women's Equality Day, marking the passage of 104 years since the 19th Amendment recognized the voting rights of women. Echoing the significance of the day, the Governor emphasized the continuous effort to uplift and secure women's rights, a tenet that Michigan cherishes deeply—vowing unyielding support toward reproductive freedoms, accessible childcare, education, and economic opportunities for women, ensuring their chances not just for survival but for success to truly thrive, as reported by WZZM13.
Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, lauding the historic achievements of females in governance, reminded Michiganders of the importance of visible female leadership, aiming to structure an environment where the sight of women in impactful roles becomes the standard, as per the Office of the Governor, this sentiment is shared by Justice Kyra Harris Bolden, who stands as the first Black woman in the Michigan Supreme Court's long history, recognizing her role as a beacon for future generations of young Black women to see and realize possibilities they may have deemed unreachable, her pride endures as a reflection of the possibilities birthed from generational sacrifice and resilience.
The Governor's legislative efforts have centered on women's rights and empowerment; she legislated for tax relief for working families, LGBTQ+ equality, and reproductive health care during her time as state representative and senator, and as governor, she repealed outdated abortion restrictions with the Reproductive Health Act and championed an enlarged Michigan Working Families Tax Credit, said to average a $3,150 annual tax refund for over 700,000 families, as reported by the Office of the Governor. Acknowledging her strides, Detroit Managing Partner of Miller Johnson Fadwa Hammoud stated, “Governor Whitmer has proven that our leadership isn’t just important; it is indispensable to the progress and future of our nation. When women lead, we all rise.”
Aware of the diverse makeup of Michigan, Governor Whitmer has placed over 1,000 women in various roles, leading to her cabinet being celebrated as the most diverse in the state's history; her appointments echo her commitment to mirror the true demographic composition of the state, with women comprising sixty percent of her appointees, all of which was encapsulated in a release shared by WZZM13.
