As the summer draws to a close, the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board (MPRB) is inviting locals to soak up the last of the warm weather with a series of canoe-centric events. Whether you're an early bird or a night owl, there's something for everyone to paddle away the end-of-summer blues.
On August 16, join the Moonlight Paddle from 7:00-8:30 PM—an event that's not just for seeing the lake but for those aged 14 and up who want to glide across it by moonlight. According to the MPRB, participants will "learn paddling techniques and safety tips on land from trained Canoe Instruction staff, then enjoy a leisurely exploration on the water." As the night sky reflects on the calm waters, it's an opportunity for serene wildlife spotting from the unique vantage point of a canoe.
Wake up with the waves at the Morning Paddle on August 30, from 9:00-11:00 AM. Designed for those 18 and over, this event promises a serene start to your day. The MPRB details that after a land-based introduction to safety and technique, paddlers can "look for wildlife from your boat and take in the serenity of the morning lake." Interested parties should register online to join the tranquil trek on the water.
For the more dedicated paddler, MPRB offers a Canoeing Workshop, an intensive 3-week series where every Tuesday from August 13 -27, between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM, you can level up your canoe prowess. Thrill-seekers, aged 12 and up, will "build and advance participants' skillsets" throughout the course, emphasizing communication and the beauty of collaboration on the water. Registration is essential, so visit their website to join.
If schedules are tight and spontaneity calls, the Drop-in Canoeing sessions might just be your paddle of choice. Free and with no strings—or registration—attached, drop by on Tuesdays at Powderhorn, Wednesdays at Loring, and Thursdays at Wirth Lake from 5-7 PM for friendly waterfront fun.
For more details on these events and to register, visit the MPRB website at MPRB's official page.
