Stepping into the shoes of police officers dealing with split-second decision-making, Minnesota state legislators participated in a unique training experience last Thursday. Organized by the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, the second legislator training day unfolded at the North Metro Regional Public Safety Training Facility in Maple Grove, offering lawmakers an inside look at police training protocols, including use-of-force scenarios, as per the Maple Grove Police Department.
The event was spearheaded by MCPA President and Eagan Police Chief Roger New, alongside Executive Director Jeff Potts. Together, they facilitated a program designed to bridge the gap between legislative understanding and policy realities. "Use of Force Training for Legislators is a 2024 MCPA legislative priority," according to the Maple Grove Police Department's Facebook post. The MCPA advocates for legislation and funding that supports expanded training opportunities.
The overarching aim of the MCPA is not lost amidst these training exercises. "To be the recognized voice for professional law enforcement in Minnesota" and "To bring the highest quality police services to the people of Minnesota," as stated by the Maple Grove Police Department.
