Nearly 60 of Minnesota's dedicated law enforcement officers and prosecutors were celebrated at a Minnesota Twins game for their unwavering efforts to combat impaired driving. These 'DWI Enforcer All-Stars', as they're called, were recognized for their commitment to public safety during the pre-game actions at Target Field this past Sunday. The event, a gesture to honor these individuals, echoes the crucial work they do in ensuring the safety of Minnesotans on the road.
In the past year, these All-Stars have made a significant impact, contributing to the staggering 27,192 DWI arrests throughout the state. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), their dedication is an essential factor in protecting the lives of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike from the dangers posed by impaired driving. OTS Director Mike Hanson praised these individuals stating, "The DWI All-Stars do more than just arrest impaired drivers — they save lives."
One standout among the honorees was Sgt. Tyler Milless of the Minnesota State Patrol was recognized for his particular contributions, including his role in training drug recognition evaluators (DREs). These DREs are pivotal in identifying and stopping not just those impaired by alcohol, but by other substances as well, including the recently legalized cannabis. "If you feel different, you drive different. That’s why it is so important to keep all impaired drivers off the road," Sgt. Tyler Milless told OTS.
However, the issue of impaired driving remains a serious challenge in Minnesota. In the past five years, more than 127,000 DWI arrests have occurred, with alcohol-related crashes responsible for an average of 376 life-changing injuries each year. The statistics underscore the necessity of the continuous efforts of law enforcement and the importance of public awareness and education in preventing these incidents. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety aims to address this challenge through a diverse range of programs focused on enforcement, education, and prevention, ultimately working towards a goal of zero traffic-related deaths.
