Over the weekend, Modesto Police Department responded to two separate organized retail thefts at Dick's Sporting Goods, leading to the arrest of five individuals. The first incident unfolded late Saturday morning when two suspects, identified as Nyeisha Jackson, 27, and Robert Glover, 50, made off with merchandise worth over $1,000. In a swift response, both were apprehended later that day in Stockton, CA, after being recognized thanks to the ongoing collaboration between the police and Dick's Sporting Goods, according to the Modesto Police Department's Facebook post reported.
The achievements of Modesto Police Department's Property Crimes Unit didn't end there. As detectives wrapped up their investigation into the first theft, another crime was promptly reported. Three more individuals, Miguel Ortiz, 33, Joey Granados, 39, and Tamicka Jones, 37, were caught after pilfering nearly $1,000 in goods. They were located and arrested in the vicinity of the store itself. These three suspects from Delano and Patterson, displayed a brazen disregard for law but were quickly brought to book. All five suspects are now facing charges related to organized retail theft and are booked into Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.
Organized retail theft has become a growing concern, prompting a collaborative front from multiple stakeholders. In 2023, the Modesto Police Department was armed with a state grant specifically aimed to counter such criminal activities. Their partnership with retailers, notably the establishment involving in these incidents, and the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office, has proven effective, indicating a 4% drop in overall crime this year compared to 2023, as reported by Modesto Police Department.
