Morgan State University is expanding its horizons and structures with the addition of new housing facilities to meet a demand driven by record enrollment. In an effort to accommodate a student body that has recently increased to over 10,000, the Baltimore-based HBCU has inaugurated three residence halls, effectively turning away from a history of housing students in hotels. According to WMAR2 News, the university welcomed a newly constructed dorm, Legacy Hall, in addition to bestowing comprehensive renovations upon two other dorms, Baldwin Hall and Cummings House.

The necessity of such expansion is evident as enrollment surged to around 8,000 students in 2022 and has steadfastly climbed since then. The Legacy Hall alone brings new amenities such as an exercise room on every other floor of its 12-story layout. Dell Jackson, Director of Public Relations for MSU stated, as per WMAR2 News, “This is part of a very strategic vision for the university to accommodate as many students as we can with housing options." Meanwhile, students like Soraya Alvarez revel in the novelty and preparedness of their living spaces, echoing a general sentiment of anticipation for the academic year ahead.

The university isn't merely offering the students a place to sleep but is also cultivating a holistic experience. New gyms, laundry rooms payable via apps or credit cards, and wellness spaces are part of the package, as reported by WMAR2 News. "We believe that it helps for the wholeness of the college experience. not just the academics, but the social interaction and the experience that one can only get from an HBCU," Jackson expressed. Jazmyn Perry, a freshman enjoying the fresh amenities of Cummings Hall, conveyed to WBALTV, the value of features like the fireside lounge and study rooms for fostering new connections.
