A tragic accident took the life of a 45-year-old mountain biker on Saturday while riding in the Auburn State Recreation Area, according to officials from CAL FIRE. The incident unfolded on the Connector Trail, a route noted for its challenging terrain targeted at skilled downhill riders. As reported by The Sacramento Bee, the biker was pronounced dead after suffering a severe crash on the trail.

Upon receiving the emergency call that morning, personnel from both the CAL FIRE and Placer County Fire Department promptly arrived at the scene, where CPR was already being administered to the fallen cyclist. CAL FIRE officials have noted, the topography and the remote location posed significant challenges during the rescue efforts. First responders even utilized an aerial drone to find a closer access point to render aid more rapidly. They had to carve a new path through the rugged landscape to shorten the distance required to perform an extraction, FOX40 reports.

Despite exhaustive rescue attempts, which included the transfer of the individual to a rope system to accelerate the evacuation and continue life-saving measures, the biker's injuries proved fatal. CAL FIRE confirmed the time of death at 11:17 a.m. The recovery operation ensued, where an advanced low-angle rope system was employed to transport the victim down to authorities awaiting below, as reported by FOX40. After the incident, the rider's friends were taken to the sheriff's office Chaplain before going back to their cars. The rider's name hasn't been released to protect their privacy.
