The community of Mooresville is reeling after a suspected arson attack on a local residence resulted in injuries to two firefighters and the death of six family pets. Authorities have placed Eric Cherry, a 54-year-old Mt. Ulla resident, under arrest in connection with the fire, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Indian Springs Drive yesterday, with emergency responders arriving to find the home engulfed in flames.
An investigation by the sheriff's office has led to Cherry facing multiple charges, including Felony Second-Degree Arson, six counts of Felony Cruelty to Animals, and Felony Arson or Other Unlawful Burning That Results in Serious Injury to a Firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician. Cherry, who was already in custody for making threats during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, was denied bond. The allegations of cruelty stem from the unfortunate demise of the family pets, which perished in the fire, WBTV reports.
On the scene of the fire, Mooresville Fire-Rescue faced intense flames and immediately conducted a search of the house. Although no residents were present, the firefighters discovered the six deceased pets. "One firefighter was treated at the scene while another was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both are expected to recover," WBTV stated.
The origin of the dispute that allegedly led to the arson relates to an earlier event, where a woman reported Cherry for breaking a window during a fight. While responding to the call, deputies overheard Cherry making threats to the victim over the phone. This preceded his arrest at his home in Mount Ulla. Following further investigation into the arson, Cherry was denied bond on the subsequent charges, and "remains in the Iredell County jail," as revealed by WCNC.
