This Saturday marks the return of the national ‘Saturation Saturday’ campaign by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), an effort wherein local law enforcement significantly intensify DWI patrols. These patrols specifically target high-risk areas and times where and when the risk of alcohol-related traffic incidents escalates, a determined push to prevent injury and fatalities on the road, as per the Irving Police Department.
The urgency of such campaigns is underscored by sobering statistics. In 2023, a total of 815 DWI arrests, 44 major accidents, and 28 fatalities were reported, according to MADD Texas. Saturation Saturday aims to not only apprehend those who choose to drive while impaired but to also send a clear message: The consequences of such a choice can be bitterly irreversible.
Local authorities are encouraging the community to "Plan While You Can," a reminder that alcohol and drugs can significantly impair a person’s abilities and judgment. They suggest considering taxis, car services, designated drivers, or public transportation as safer alternatives to driving under the influence.
