A tragic event unfolded in New Castle last night as two lives were claimed in a three-vehicle collision. A 29-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, both hailing from New Castle, Delaware, lost their lives in the crash that took place on Christiana Road at its intersection with Airport Road. The incident occurred shortly after 11:20 p.m., with local authorities now piecing together the harrowing details of the events that led up to the fatal impact.
According to the Delaware State Police, the Dodge Grand Caravan, containing the victims, was legally crossing the intersection following a green traffic light when a 2022 Kia K5, reportedly speeding in the opposite direction, breached a red signal and struck the Dodge. The force of the collision caused the minivan to spin and overturn, leading to instant fatalities and causing subsequent injuries to four other child passengers, who have been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Kia, a 26-year-old man from Wilmington, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Compounding the chaotic aftermath, the careening Kia also hit a 2020 Hyundai Tucson operated by a 43-year-old woman from Bear, Delaware, who was also seriously injured in the ordeal. In the wake of the crash, Christiana Road was shut down for approximately six hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit of Troop 2 conducted their rigorous investigation. The authorities have made an appeal for witnesses to step forward and have provided a helpline for contact: Corporal D. McKenna can be reached by calling 302-365-8486.
