Construction crews are rolling out traffic calming measures on Chartiers Avenue starting today. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) is spearheading the project, which aims to improve pedestrian safety and ensure smoother traffic flow in the Chartiers neighborhood. Among the updates, expect to see painted bump-outs on Main Street that will shorten pedestrian crossings, speed tables strategically placed between Warfle Street and Suter Street, as well as Suter St. and Middletown Road, and a pedestrian refuge island on Suter St., according to information released by the City of Pittsburgh.

Construction work kicked off with the speed table installation this Wednesday, August 21st, and is projected to wrap in two days. Flaggers will be on-site, orchestrating alternating traffic patterns. Following a brief interval, crews will return to add roadway markings and install signage. Mayor Ed Gainey expressed his commitment to the community's well-being, saying, "We’re focused on protecting and improving the ability of all residents to move around safely on Chartiers Avenue. Hopefully, some of these measures will have motorists be more aware of the posted sped limit sign," as detailed by the city's press release

A traffic study found a startling statistic: 89 percent of motorists on Chartiers Ave. were speeding past the 25mph limit. The implementation of these changes is a direct response to these findings, with safety as the paramount concern.
