Water erupted from a broken line beneath the Fort Duquesne Bridge late on Thursday night, causing streams of water to cascade down near the North Shore side. According to WTAE, the unexpected deluge began pouring around 11 p.m. and continued without interruption for some time. It took Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) crews until nearly 2 a.m. to finally shut off the flow.
The incident, which involved a substantial 30-inch water main, fortunately, didn't lead to any water shortages for local residents, and traffic was not impacted, even as the efforts to control and then cease the gushing water unfolded. "No one is without water and no traffic has been affected," officials from the PWSA informed WPXI. Yet, what principally caused the infrastructure to fail remains unknown at this hour.
While the cause of the major interruption is still under investigation, the authority is set to actively engage to figure out the root of the problem.
