A North Carolina man is facing charges after being accused of setting a fire that not only injured firefighters but also resulted in the tragic death of six pets. According to information from the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, 54-year-old Eric Donnelle Cherry of Mt. Ulla was arrested following an investigation into the blaze at Mooresville’s 121 Indian Springs Drive on August 1.
Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and, two firefighters were injured while responding to the emergency. Although both are expected to recover, one had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. Also, amid the charred remains, loss weighed heavily, with the discovery of six deceased family pets.
Preceding the fire, on July 30, Cherry had already attracted law enforcement's attention after a domestic dispute led to property damage and threats at the same residence. Deputies had responded to a call about Cherry breaking a window and while there, they overheard him make threats during a phone call, as mentioned in a report filed that day.
Cherry, who was previously taken into custody for those threats, faced a new set of felony charges related to the fire. The seriousness of these allegations kept him detained without bond. The magistrate at the Iredell County Detention Center, following a thorough investigation, acknowledged the gravity of the situation during Cherry's court appearance on August 7.
The surrounding community and the local fire departments have felt the weight of this act, as they mourn the loss of the pets and wish a swift recovery to the injured firefighters. Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against Cherry are ongoing as he awaits his next hearing from behind bars.
