An unspeakable tragedy unfolded yesterday morning in North Carolina as a series of domestic violence-related shootings left multiple people injured and two dead, including a mother and the alleged shooter. According to WCNC, a distress call led deputies and police to a Sharpsburg home where they discovered a man and a woman with gunshot wounds; both were rushed to Vidant Hospital for medical care. The woman fatally shot was later identified by family members as 27-year-old Kiera Massenburg. Her 6-year-old daughter remains in critical condition.
After shooting the pair, the suspect, Daquan Marcato Jones, reportedly fled with another woman and her child to a second location in Nash County. When deputies arrived, they witnessed the chilling aftermath: Jones, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the woman, also deceased, found in a car outside the home on Jamie Road, as detailed in a report by WRAL News. The precise relationship between Jones and the residence remains unknown.
Shaun Alston, a friend of the shooter, recounted to WRAL News the horrific sounds emerging from Jones's home, "It's like a Lifetime movie," Alston described, seemingly in disbelief at the sounds of "Pow ... pow," followed by law enforcement's commands to "Get down! Get down!" Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone mentioned to the press that Jones likely shot himself upon the deputies' arrival.
Adding to the narrative's complexity, court records revealed that Jones had a previous arrest for felony assault last month in Edgecombe County and was expected at his first court appearance on Christmas Day. EMS employees found the 6-year-old girl at a home on Leigh Road, suffering from gunshot wounds, and as of today, the condition of the 6-year-old remains uncertain, with all three victims having undergone surgery. Law enforcement officials have not disclosed the names of the other two victims, with family members gathered near the intersection of Gold Drive and Jamie Road declining to speak to WRAL News.
