To find homes for pets in need, Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is introducing two adoption promotions this August with a spotlight on the Summer Olympics and the Back-To-School season. The initiative aims to help reduce the high number of animals currently in their care. According to a recent press release, the shelter has handled an overflowing number of animals, with counts sometimes rising to 700. "There have been many times this summer when we’ve had a concerningly high number of animals under our umbrella of care, sometimes up to 700," OCAS Manager Diane Summers stated in a news statement. The agency is calling for community support in the form of adoptions and fostering.

The "Gold Medal Favorites" program will apply to pets that have been at the shelter for four weeks or longer, marking them with a gold sticker and serving as a signal for a reduced $10 adoption fee. The press release notes, "Every time we turn to our community for help, people deliver. We’re again asking for help and want to share a word of thanks to everyone who has supported us during this period of time." In conjunction, "Teacher’s Pet" targets school district employees who will enjoy waived fees upon presenting proper identification. "Much like animal welfare workers, teachers and school staff are unsung heroes," Summers elaborated.

Each adopted pet through these August promotions will come spayed or neutered, as well as vaccinated and microchipped, ensuring they are ready for their new homes.

Families and individuals looking to adopt or foster a pet, or merely seeking additional details, are directed to visit OCAS' website.
