Two adults and a child were rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after a crash at State Road 436 and Hermits Trail in Altamonte Springs, an intersection that made headlines earlier this year when a driver crossed the median and killed two women in a head-on collision. Officials were dispatched to the scene just before 4:30 p.m., and police say the three patients suffered non-life-threatening injuries. What led to the crash has not yet been determined, according to police.
The Altamonte Springs Police Department confirmed the hospitalizations and said the crash caused significant area traffic delays, with officers diverting traffic at Newburyport Avenue, according to Fox 35 Orlando. Newburyport Avenue also happens to connect directly to 175 Newburyport Avenue, the site of the department's own headquarters and Public Safety Complex, according to the City of Altamonte Springs, which likely made it a natural detour route for responding officers.
A Corner With a Troubled Recent History
Friday's crash lands squarely at a stretch of East Altamonte Drive that has already drawn scrutiny this year. On February 17, a driver crossed the median at this same intersection and struck a Honda SUV head-on, killing two women in a collision that led to DUI manslaughter charges filed in June, as Hoodline reported in its DUI manslaughter coverage. Local governments have not ignored the corner's history. Seminole County and the City of Altamonte Springs designated the intersection of State Road 436, Hermits Trail, Magnolia, and Newburyport Avenue for safety and efficiency improvements under a 2024–2026 infrastructure sales surtax project, per the City of Winter Springs. State Road 436, known locally as East Altamonte Drive, is a 25.5-mile FDOT-maintained highway built in the late 1960s that links Seminole and Orange counties and connects Apopka to Orlando International Airport, per its Wikipedia entry. Despite the corridor's crash history, broader data suggests Seminole County is comparatively safe.
