Ground has been officially broken for a new fire station in Orlando, an infrastructure upgrade aimed to enhance emergency response times and overall safety in the city. Mayor Buddy Dyer, joined by District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and Orlando Fire Chief Charlie Salazar, marked the momentous occasion with a ceremony at the proposed site. Station 6, currently situated at East Robinson Street, will be relocating to 501 Herndon Ave, closer to the Orlando Executive Airport, as reported by WFTV.
The move intends to not only replace the old facility but also strategically improve it to serve the expanding neighborhoods more effectively. Deputy Fire Chief Craig Hulette emphasized the significance of the new location, stating, "This location is at a better strategic location, especially for the people in Baldwin Park. That neighborhood has grown since the old Station 6 was built," in an interview as per FOX 35 Orlando. The groundbreaking ceremony coincides with a city-wide effort to keep pace with growing demand and reflects the commitment of local officials to public safety and service excellence.
Scheduled to open in 2025, the new 15,913-square-foot station is said to be equipped with the capacity to house 36 firefighters and will have four bays, along with an Engine, a Tower Truck, and a Rescue. These resources are expected to contribute greatly to the community's well-being, with modern facilities designed to ensure firefighter health and safety.
