This committee, whose formation was reported by WFTV, started meeting last month and aims to put together a meaningful tribute to the 49 lives lost in the tragic 2016 mass shooting.
The committee is expected to proceed with discussions regarding their vision for the space, having not yet reached a consensus on the design phase. Public participation has been a significant aspect of the process, with the previous meeting featuring an open house where community members shared various ideas for the memorial. These ideas ranged from peaceful parks with water features to elements that would serve an educational purpose, celebrating both the victims and the survivors of the tragedy, as WFTV detailed. The upcoming sessions are slated for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and the same time on Thursday.
According to a WESH report, the City of Orlando has ownership of the Pulse site and has been spearheading the efforts to establish a permanent memorial. The advisory committee comprises 18 members including family members of victims and survivors, community leaders, and experts in design and engineering. They have been charged with the heavy responsibility of recommending a conceptual design by the year's end.
During their first month's meetings, the group was briefed on Florida's Sunshine Laws by a city attorney and viewed presentations from cities with their memorials for similar tragedies. This sparked mixed emotions, with some feeling "hopeful" and others "skeptical," a sentiment captured by WESH. Members of the public who wish to participate in the discussion can do so virtually or in person at the Orlando City Hall for the scheduled August meetings.
