Orlando is gearing up for a rather unorthodox flock to land on its urban roosts—massive, inflatable pigeons have been announced as the city's latest public art installation. According to ClickOrlando, these birds won't be hard to miss with their neon hues and dimensions stretching up to 21 feet long and 16 feet high.
In what seems to be an effort to breathe new life into city aesthetics, the Creative City Project has been funded, in part by the county, to strategically place these birds atop several downtown rooftops. Beginning installation within the next week or so, the expectation is to draw residents and tourists alike to the heart of Orlando. "As urban landscapes have evolved, we can find new ways to foster a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings in an urban environment," city spokesperson Ashley Papagni stated, as per ClickOrlando.
These inflatable sculptures, towering at 16-foot-tall, are intended to magnify the presence of what is often considered a pest, compelling passersby to reconsider the pigeon's role in our urban landscape. The installation looks to spark a conversation about the boundaries we often try to impose on non-human species within our city limits. As reported by Bungalower, the initiative hopes that by making these pigeons impossible to overlook, it can inspire empathy towards creatures that are frequently neglected or scorned.
With these avian giants slated to appear around August 17th, downtown Orlando is perched for an interesting conversation starter.
