Orlando Woman Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Over $121,000 from SSA and VASource: Google Street View

An Orlando woman has admitted to the theft of over $121,000 in government funds. Teresa Eve Hunt, 63, entered a guilty plea for theft of government property and could face up to a decade behind bars. Hunt agreed to the terms of her plea which include forfeiting the proceeds of her illegal activities and full restitution to both the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Hunt's fraudulent actions came to light after the SSA and VA deposited benefits into a checking account, designated for M.H., Hunt's mother, who passed away in April 2016. Despite the death of M.H., Hunt, who had power of attorney, failed to notify the agencies — allowing the benefits to continue. According to the US Attorney's Office, Hunt misappropriated $62,857 in Social Security funds and $59,120.95 from the VA, putting these funds to personal use.

The investigation of Hunt's case was carried out by the Social Security Administration - Office of the Inspector General, and the Department of Veterans Affairs - Office of Inspector General's Southeast Field Office. Special Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Del Mastro is handling the prosecution. Hunt, who appeared remorseful during the proceedings, has a sentencing hearing set for December 11.
