Osceola County school administrators are set to introduce a new level of security measures this school year, including metal detectors for random searches. In a policy aimed at curtailing potentially harmful items on campus, such as weapons and drugs, WFTV reports handheld metal detection devices will be used for searching students' personal belongings, and classrooms will be subject to random checks, following the district's guidelines for preserving student privacy.
While the intent is to maintain a safe space conducive to learning, the district will be following its Code of Student Conduct should prohibited items be found during the searches. The Osceola County School District assured in an email, “Safe and secure learning environments will always remain the top priority”, as per WFTV.
However, the reception of this new safety protocol among parents and students is mixed. According to a text message sent to parents, some parents, like Sandra Garcia, are undecided. "My daughter, she was telling me how they were going to start having metal detectors and randomly searching her bag," Garcia stated, as per FOX 35 Orlando. Her daughter, an incoming sophomore, attends what she describes as "a really good school with really good kids."
The policy will affect students from the sixth grade upwards, using hand-held metal detectors wielded by school staff. Gilianna Guerrero, an 8th grader, told FOX 35 Orlando, “It’s random that they’re doing this now," Guerrero said. "If they’re doing this now, why didn’t they do this before?” with a tone of confusion about the timing. In contrast, Luis Cobos, whose three-year-old daughter will start pre-k soon, sees the necessity for such measures, "It’s a good thing because of all the shootings that have happened," Cobos said. "The kids have to be safe."
The implementation details of the searches involve a tool for choosing classrooms electronically at random, according to FOX 35 Orlando. The district stated that this random search regime is expected to happen regularly throughout the upcoming school year. Any item confiscated during these searches will be handled as per the district’s established rules, involving the code of student conduct and possibly law enforcement, if necessary.
