More than 140 roosters, survivors of an illicit cockfighting ring in Pierce County, are now seeking permanent homes after their seizure earlier this month from a property in Buckley. As reported by MyNorthwest, these birds were specifically bred and conditioned for cockfighting but have been rescued and are on the path to recovery at Heartwood Haven, a sanctuary in Roy.
Unfortunately, in a previous bust in Yakima County, the narrative for 64 roosters did not run to find a similar chance at life. In an incident recounted by The Chronicle, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office chose to quickly euthanize them, an action that contrasts starkly with the fate of the rescued birds in Pierce County. Although law enforcement deemed the birds aggressive, Heartwood Haven seeks to rehome them instead potentially.
The organization has a history of rehoming birds used for cockfighting. Since its inception in 2017, Heartwood Haven has successfully placed nearly 500 roosters into new homes, per details furnished by KOMO News. Such efforts represent a beacon of hope for animals, who are unfortunately tangled in human vice.
