A standoff in northwest Grand Rapids concluded without incident as a man, suspected of trespassing, surrendered to police after barricading himself inside a vacant property. The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) responded to the scene near Pine Avenue and Chatham Street on Monday, following a call from a property owner who suspected a squatter on his property, as reported by WOODTV.
The property owner, who had all the reasons to believe the vacant building was intruded upon by a squatter, reported the incident. Surrounded by officers, the suspect then decided to barricade himself on the building's second floor, creating a standoff situation, FOX 17 explained.
Negotiators from the police department worked to communicate with the barricaded man for several hours. Their efforts were eventually successful, resulting in the man exiting the property and being taken into custody without further complications.
After the standoff that unfolded over multiple hours, the man was seen being led out of the home handcuffed by several officers bearing arm, as per visuals captured by WZZM 13. No one else was reported to be inside the home during the incident.
GRPD has not released details regarding the identity of the man or any potential charges. However, the situation was resolved peacefully, and the investigation into the trespassing incident is ongoing. Further updates are expected as GRPD continues to delve into the circumstances surrounding the occupancy of the once vacant property.
