The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) aims to keep night drivers safe. With evening commutes comes added risk, and PennDOT urges motorists to be watchful and take proactive steps against common dangers such as drowsiness, distractions, and speeding, especially after the sun goes down, as reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Many associate drowsiness with late hours, and rightfully so. After all, the body naturally yearns to rest as darkness falls. But tired drivers might just tend to overestimate their ability to remain vigilant. PennDOT recommends taking simple yet effective measures such as pulling over for breaks, rolling down windows, or consuming a caffeinated beverage to help stave off sleepiness. They also advise to closely monitor how any medication—one might be taking—affects you, as pointed out in a statement from the department.

Distracted driving, on the other hand, is a peril that's compounded by night's cloak. Doing your hair, chatting with passengers, or even a glance at a phone screen substantially increases the odds of a crash when you're already grappling with low visibility. In 2022 alone, such lapses in attention led to 3,308 fatalities, as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Despite the temptation to speed on less crowded streets, the dark hours aren't the time to test how fast your car can go. Speeding makes it just harder to react to the unseen, turning road surprises into potential tragedies. The NHTSA found that though there's been a dip in speeding-related crashes, these incidents still comprised 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2022. In Pennsylvania, as per PennDOT's records, speeding was a factor in 3,676 crashes, leading to 193 deaths last year.
