In a recent initiative to ensure that the upcoming Labor Day weekend is marked by safety rather than tragedy, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) teamed up with various state agencies and safety advocates to bring an urgent message to drivers: Stay responsible behind the wheel. The stage for this event was set at the Keystone Welcome Center at Tioga, where together with the Pennsylvania State Police, Highway Safety Network, Geisinger Medical Center, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR), PennDOT shared wisdom on keeping roadways safe.
Highlighting the day's poignant significance, PennDOT showcased the PennDOT Workers' Memorial. The memorial, a somber tribute to the 90 workers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice since 1970, delivered a powerful message about the human cost of carelessness on the roads. Among those honored were eight District 3 workers, including Leah Rumsey, whose tragic death inspired the memorial's creation, according to a recent PennDOT release.
The event was not only about reflection but also about proactive education. Officials took the time to speak with travelers, offering actionable advice for safe driving. Key tips included planning one's route, checking weather and road conditions ahead of time, and leaving early to avoid the temptation of rushed driving. Emphasis was also placed on the importance of wearing seat belts and avoiding distractions while driving—factors that can mean the difference between a routine trip and a catastrophic one.
With a national crackdown on impaired driving already underway, PennDOT also warned of the heightened patrols and enforcement against intoxicated driving. "Do not drive impaired by drugs or alcohol," they urged. These reminders come at a time when the anticipation of festive gatherings often leads to an uptick in preventable vehicular accidents. The collective aim of PennDOT, State Police, and its partners was clear: to reduce the incidence of grief and loss that too often accompanies the holiday's road travel.
