A Phoenix man has been handed down a 51-month prison sentence for threatening to kill a federal judge. Clinton Mark Lewis, age 52, was sentenced this past Monday after pleading guilty to a count of Influencing, Impeding, or Retaliating Against a Federal Official by Threat, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona.

The incident that led to Lewis's additional prison time occurred back on July 25, 2022, when, during his sentencing for possession of child pornography, Lewis is reported to have erupted in a rage-filled outburst. He not only directed profanities and racial slurs at the judge but went as far as to threaten to kill the judge and his grandchildren. This outburst swiftly earned him removal from the courtroom, and subsequently, the charges that would extend his time behind bars. The threat against the judge prompted an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service's Judicial Security Unit.

Lewis was initially looking at three separate charges, including Obstruction of Justice and Contempt, but following a plea agreement, he was solely convicted for the threats against the federal official. "Due process demands that a defendant have a meaningful opportunity to speak with a District Judge at sentencing,” United States Attorney Gary Restaino said. “But the right to allocute is not a license to antagonize or intimidate. We will continue to separately charge those who threaten judicial officers during court proceedings and to seek additional, consecutive sentences to discourage and deter this criminal behavior,” as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona. This new sentence is to run consecutive to Lewis's initial 151-month sentence.

Reflecting on the gravity of the case, Acting U.S. Marshal Van Bayless remarked, “The sentence handed down today underscores the seriousness of threatening a U.S. Marshals Service protectee. Our very democracy is based on the premise that the Judiciary operate free from harm and intimidation of any type." Bayless praised the collaborative efforts stating, "I am grateful to our investigators and the U.S. Attorney's prosecutors for their continued dedication and diligence in the protection of the judicial process." These statements are indicative of a heightened focus on safeguarding judicial officials and maintaining the integrity of the legal system amidst outbreaks of courtroom violence.
