The Pineville Police Department has released body-worn camera footage capturing the fatal shooting of an unarmed 46-year-old man, Dennis Bodden, which occurred off-duty in May. The release, which includes three videos, follows requests from Bodden's mother and the Charlotte Observer. As reported by QC Nerve, the encounter originated from an allegation of shoplifting at a Food Lion and culminated in the fatal incident in a nearby apartment complex parking lot.
According to footage shared on YouTube by the department, Pineville PD Sgt. Adam Roberts, working as a security in his off-duty hours at the McMullen Creek Market shopping center, confronted Bodden at the Food Lion's parking lot following a call regarding the supposed theft of wine and produce. After crossing Johnston Road, Bodden, still pursued by Roberts, entered the Berkshire Place apartment complex in Charlotte. Leading up to the shooting, Bodden apparently disregarded 22 verbal orders issued by the officer, as per WBTV.
Bodden had faced two outstanding felony warrants due to previous incidents of shoplifting at the same Food Lion, according to the police. He was banned by both the store and the local police from returning to the Food Lion, after several incidents from April to May this year. The department's decision to release the videos provides a clearer picture of the events, providing raw footage from the officers' cameras and a critical incident briefing video which includes the police department's summary of the shooting, as mentioned by WCNC.
The entire incident, as shown in the released videos, spanned approximately five minutes. It began with Roberts' confrontation of Bodden and concluded with the shooting in the parking lot. This incident has sparked significant public interest, with the bodycam footage anticipated as critical to understanding exactly what occurred that day. As the community grapples with the tragic loss and questions about police conduct, the bodycam footage stands as a sobering testament to the events that led to Dennis Bodden's untimely death, from the confrontation outside the Food Lion on Johnston Road to the fatal encounter in the apartment complex parking lot.
