A Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) bus became entangled in the aftermath of a police chase Tuesday afternoon, ultimately careening into a Homewood residence. The chase, originating in Monroeville, culminated in a fleeing vehicle striking a bus, thereby propelling the larger vehicle into a building on Hamilton Avenue, as reported by WPXI.
According to WPXI, homeowner Dennis Williams recounted the incident, noting he was in the house when the impact occurred, "I heard a loud smash and crash. It didn’t even shake the house. Just a noise. When I looked out, this is the sight I saw." Williams, who believes that had he been in his usual spot on the front porch, may not have been fortuitously spared by fate, said, "By the Grace of God, I wasn’t, today.”
From a structural standpoint, Williams assured WTAE that his home withstood the chaos, but the front porch absorbed the brunt of the force and was condemned. According to PRT, eight passengers were aboard the bus, with the driver and one passenger being transported to a hospital. Injuries sustained are reportedly non-serious.
In connection to the chase, a Monroeville police officer, pursued the suspect with a broken leg to the hospital, exemplifying the unforeseen collateral of urban pursuits. A towed Kia SUV with notable front-end damage was seen at the crash site. PRT has announced via X that normal service for the 71D bus stop at the location is currently disrupted.
