As summer wanes and the familiar early morning hustle returns, Plymouth's streets once again echo with the sounds of school buses carrying the city's youngest residents to their halls of education. The Plymouth Public Safety Department has issued a timely reminder to motorists regarding the necessity of obeying traffic laws around school buses, especially those that safeguard children during their journey to and from school.
Plymouth Police emphasize that it's not just common courtesy, but a legal imperative to stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended—a mandate that comes with a steep minimum fine of $500 for those who choose to ignore it, as reported by the City of Plymouth.
In a message that resonates with both urgency and a deep-seated concern for child safety, Plymouth Police Officer Anthony Elia conveyed the community's frustration with the ongoing violations. "Each year, we continue to see violations and hear from bus companies about drivers not stopping," Elia stated, according to Plymouth Public Safety Department's recent news release. He further implored drivers, "It’s frustrating because the stop signs and flashing lights are there to protect kids. Please, stay safe and stop for school buses."
