In a concerted effort to curb the ever-present shadow of gun violence and violent crime, Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) continues its operation within various communities and law enforcement levels. Throughout August, several cases have highlighted the initiative's commitment to its cause. Notable among these has been the prosecution and sentencing of three convicted felons, as announced by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
As reported by the Department of Justice's website, Sophondara Hun, a 28-year-old man from Stockton found himself sentenced to over three years in prison. Hun, having a history of felony convictions, was found sleeping in someone's apartment with .22 caliber bullets, despite being prohibited from ammunition possession. A similar fate befell Ramon Garcia Jr., who, after a domestic violence incident, was apprehended and later discovered to possess an unauthorized firearm. Garcia received a seven-year sentence for his actions. Dexter Weeks, yet another felon from Galt, also received a seven-year sentence when a parole search uncovered a stolen firearm in his residence.
The initiative, which was strengthened on May 26, 2021, by the U.S. Department of Justice, leans heavily on certain fundamental principles. These include building trust within communities, supporting community organizations that aid in preemptively stopping violence, and setting strategic enforcement priorities. The aim is not just to apprehend after the fact, but rather to prevent violence from breaking out in the first place.
