Witnesses recounted that shortly after the eviction was enforced at 1:00 p.m., opportunists took to looting, with items rapidly disappearing into rental trucks and shopping carts. The City of Atlanta's Nightlife Division released a statement, stressing the incident as a private matter but ensuring the situation was under watch, as stated by FOX 5 Atlanta. The Red Martini Lounge had, according to court documents, been embroiled in a dispute with their landlord, Raph + Rita Ventures, LLC since August last year.
In a ruling by the Fulton County Magistrate Court, Red Martini was noted to have overstepped its lease term and owed more than $55,000 in rent. Despite claims from the bar's owner, Brian Alt, of having paid rent punctually, the court ruled in favor of the landlord last December. Shawn McCray, a patron who looked forward to the weekly R&B nights, expressed dismay over the abrupt closure, and Steven Chatman shared that his friend, now jobless, was among the employees blindsided by the event.
An attorney representing Red Martini's owner put forth a statement acquired by Atlanta News First claiming the eviction was "abruptly and unlawfully" executed without any prior notice from the landlord or Fulton County Marshal’s Department. The statement alleges that the actions taken by Raph + Rita Ventures, LLC and the marshals were not only "illegal but also deeply immoral." Responses from the landlord's attorney were not immediately available.
In a twist of fate, Red Martini is also recognized as the venue where a former Douglas County judge was arrested this past June. The Supreme Court of Georgia later removed Christina Peterson from the bench over purported violations of judicial conduct related to that event.
