Pittsburgh drivers should brace themselves for potential delays as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) gears up to repair a significant hole on the Crosstown Boulevard ramp leading to the Boulevard of the Allies. The cavity, which unveiled itself to concerned onlookers beneath the bridge, exposes not only the sky but also the vulnerability of our infrastructure. PennDOT has scheduled detours beginning Friday to address this urgent fix, as detailed by TribLIVE.
The ramp has been temporarily reopened with a metal plate covering the hole since its discovery on Monday, an arrangement that may appear stable to the unsuspecting driver navigating above. However, those with a vantage point from below, such as Jacqueline Geier, expressed concern upon seeing the exposed rebar and daylight piercing through the concrete. "Oh, my God. That's scary. That's crazy. That's not good. It needs to be fixed," Geier stated, as per WTAE interview.
Lori Musto, PennDOT District 11 assistant district executive for maintenance, has emphasized the hole does not pose a major threat to structural integrity. "The danger more is more, (if) a vehicle hits it, it would cause damage to their tire.," she said. "It's obviously a large pothole in the bridge deck, but it's not for a car falling through," Musto explained, according to WTAE. The upcoming repair work is part of a stopgap measure, with a larger project for the ramp anticipated in the years ahead.
During the repair work, traffic will be reduced to one lane on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Preparatory work will then necessitate a ramp closure from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday. The primary repair is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Thursday and extend through the weekend, reopening at 6 a.m. Monday, weather permitting. Adding to the potential disruptions, PennDOT also announced an "around-the-clock lane closure" for painting operations on westbound I-376 under the Birmingham Bridge, running from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, as reported by TribLIVE.
