On Friday, following a thorough investigation into a devastating crash that occurred on May 16, 2023, 23-year-old Andres Laris was arrested and is facing serious charges related to the incident that led to the death of an 8-year-old boy and injured three others. According to KTLA, Laris was driving at over 100 miles per hour on Arlington Avenue in Riverside when he lost control and veered into the opposing lanes, colliding with a Nissan sedan.
The crash resulted in the tragic death of Obed Liam Barbosa Carbajal and left his siblings and the driver, their 25-year-old sister, with serious to critical injuries, amidst the chaos, Riverside police reported that the driver was possibly taking her younger siblings to school at the time of the collision, and Laris, who was also seriously injured in the crash, was found to have cannabis in his system according to toxicology reports, per ABC7.
Following Laris's arrest, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office approved one felony count of murder for causing death to Barbosa-Carbajal, along with three felony counts of driving across a divided highway leading to great bodily injury, Laris is currently detained with bail set at $1 million as reported by CBS Los Angeles. Riverside Police underscored the decision to pursue a murder charge was influenced by Laris's prior conduct, including two speeding citations, and a completed online traffic safety course that explicitly warned against the dangers of excessive speed.
