On August 23, Sean Currenton was sentenced to 19 years in prison after being convicted of a series of domestic violence charges and the subsequent intimidation of a witness. The sentencing, as reported by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, followed a jury's verdict from the previous year that found Currenton guilty of assaulting the victim—a woman he had convinced to move to the United States after meeting her online—and then threatening her life to prevent her from testifying against him.
Currenton's conviction also took into account he had committed a felony while out on bail and had a notable criminal past, including a strike conviction for dissuading another witness from reporting a crime. The court emphasized the severity of his actions by noting the victim's particular vulnerability and Currenton's increasingly serious prior convictions.
According to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, the violent incident occurred on September 14, 2022, when, during an argument in a car, Currenton became violent and threatened to kill his spouse. The victim managed to flee and seek help at a nearby restaurant, which led to a witness calling 911, resulting in Currenton's arrest. While he was out of custody awaiting his preliminary hearing, Currenton told the victim he would kill her if she spoke the truth, prompting her to call 911 again, and adding another layer of charges to his case.
