The San Antonio City Council has a hefty agenda for their special session today, one that includes chewing over the prospect of a new $160 million splurge on a baseball stadium. The potential new digs for the San Antonio Missions is proposed to be sited at the San Pedro Creek Culture Park area, a development pitch aimed at bolstering the local economy. FOX San Antonio reports the facility is designed to seat up to 4,500 fans for baseball games, and stretch its limbs to accommodate as many as 7,000 souls for other events.
This isn't just a home run for San Antonio Missions and their 70 home games. The city foresees the venue playing host to a myriad of events including college and high school tournaments, and some festivities that fall under the 'special' category. The council meeting is detailed to kick off with a public hearing at 1 p.m. today, where they'll parse out the fine print of this mammoth proposal. According to KTSA, the countdown to completion, assuming the green light goes on, is set for 2028.
Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai seems to have a finger on the pulse of fiscal worrywarts, insisting on a budget plan that won't send homeowners' property taxes through the roof. He avowed, "I want minimal, if any, impact on homeowners' property taxes," according to an earlier interview with FOX San Antonio. Sakai is hanging his hat on the development in the San Pedro Creek area to stand the cost of the bonds for the stadium.
