The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, in coordination with various law enforcement agencies, recently conducted a focused retail theft operation known as "Operation Smash & Grab" from August 9th to August 22nd across several shopping districts in San Bernardino County. The crackdown followed concerns about escalating thefts at retail establishments by organized criminal groups.
According to a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, during the operation, law enforcement made eight felony arrests and 26 misdemeanor arrests. Additionally, $9,693 worth of property was recovered. The operation aimed to quickly intervene in the series of thefts involving measures ranging from robbery to vandalism, with the sincerest hope of returning a measure of safety to the local shopping environments.
Reports suggested that these criminal crews were using tactics of intimidation and a collective approach to put pressure on residents and stores, creating an atmosphere filled with tension and unease. "These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents," stated the Sheriff's department in their briefing.
To combat this surge in retail crime, Operation Smash & Grab mobilized resources from the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division and Rancho Cucamonga Station, along with the San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department. These agencies worked together to strategically identify and disrupt the activities of these theft crews. Investigators were authorized to employ both conventional and non-conventional investigative methods to effectively lessen the impact of these criminal operations.
