On Sunday, August 11, at around 2:09 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an incident involving a reported brandishing of a firearm in the Lytle Creek area. Deputies were providing support to the U.S. Forestry Service when they encountered the suspects, who were driving a dark gray Honda Civic sedan, near the 400 block of N. Lytle Creek Road. According to the sheriff's official release, a "ghost gun," a 9mm handgun lacking a serial number, was found during the felony vehicle stop of the suspects at the intersection of Lytle Creek Road and Glen Helen Park Way.
The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Humberto Nambo and a 17-year-old juvenile, were both detained by authorities. Brandishing the unserialized firearm, authorities eventually discovered it within reachable distance of both suspects. Nambo, a Rialto resident, was taken into custody for being a felon in possession of a firearm and on a felony no-bail warrant for assault with a deadly weapon. The juvenile was cited for possession of a loaded firearm both on his person and in a vehicle at a public place and then released to his parents. Despite their efforts, deputies were unable to locate any victims relating to the initial brandishing report.
While the details surrounding the actual incident of brandishing a weapon remain unclear, the arrests underscore the ongoing concerns about "ghost guns," firearms that are typically assembled from parts and lack serial numbers, making them difficult to trace. These weapons have been a point of contention in discussions about gun violence and laws aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegally obtained firearms and the sheriff's department has asked anybody with knowledge of the incident to come forward.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff asks anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Fontana Station at (909) 356-6767. Anonymous tips can also be directed to the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463), or left on the website at www.wetip.com.
