A construction worker was killed in an accident at a Scripps Ranch construction site in San Diego. On Wednesday, Joel Olea Gomez, a 27-year-old resident of San Marcos, was fatally injured when he became trapped under a pipe following a trench collapse, as reported by the Department of the Medical Examiner. The accident occurred near 10062 Hoyt Park Drive during the early morning hours.
An emergency call was placed around 4 a.m., and paramedics dispatched to the scene confirmed Gomez’s death due to obvious injuries, including crush injuries of the torso. According to the Medical Examiner's report, Gomez and a coworker assisted another worker with guiding a large metal pipe down a 20 ft trench when the accident unfolded. The trench collapsed, and Gomez was pinned against the wall by the pipe, becoming dirt-covered. The accident prompted a response from the San Diego Fire Rescue, which could not save the worker. In a statement reported by Hoodline, Deputy Chief of Operations for SDFD Dan Eddy stated, "The pipe that fell on the victim was a four-foot steel and concrete pipe."
Construction activities at the Scripps Ranch site have been suspended following the tragic event. The site, known for being part of a pure water project, had approximately 30 workers present when the accident occurred. The California Occupational Health and Safety Administration has since launched an investigation into the mishap, aiming to unravel the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
Recovery efforts by a technical rescue team were needed to safely extricate Gomez's body from under the rubble. SDFD crews had to use an excavator to remove the dirt before retrieving the body. "Recovery is complete. Crews will be clearing this scene in about an hour," an SDFD post noted, as cited in a Hoodline report. The outcome of the investigation is currently pending as officials continue to analyze all factors contributing to this catastrophic event.
