San Diego County has launched its participation in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign, an initiative aimed at helping animals find their forever homes. Starting yesterday and extending through August 10, San Diego County Animal Services is waiving all adoption fees at their shelters. This effort coincides with the Clear the Shelters campaign beginning Aug 10 through Sept. 10, a month-long event that, according to the County of San Diego, has successfully found homes for over 1 million pets since its inception.
To facilitate adoptions, the County encourages prospective pet owners to visit its website and view the online listings of available animals. As reported by the County of San Diego, animals up for adoption include a range of furry and non-furry friends, from dogs and cats to roosters and guinea pigs. For those hesitant owing to the expected high demand during the campaign, Animal Services staff recommend having a second or third choice in mind if your top pick is already adopted.
Speaking about the import of the initiative, Steve Lujan, interim director of the San Diego County Animal Services, expressed the agency's commitment. "We participate in Clear the Shelters because it's an important opportunity to find our wonderful animals a wonderful forever home," Lujan stated, as per the County of San Diego. "Helping pair animals and people is one of our highest priorities." These waived fees, as per the County News Center, apply not only during the campaign but also extend year-round to senior adopters, senior pets, and those who have been looking for a new owner for more than 30 days.
The shelters are open to walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Locations include the South Shelter in Bonita and the North Shelter in Carlsbad. Information about the shelter's fostering program is readily available for those who cannot adopt but still wish to contribute.
