Concern has surfaced among the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District parents after two incidents involving migrants trying to board school buses with children on board were reported earlier this week. According to an email sent out by Superintendent Liz Bystedt, a group of migrants tried to board a bus during the morning pick-up along Highway 94 on Wednesday, just a day after an attempt to stop a bus took place in the same area, as reported by CBS 8.
Nicole Cardinale, a parent within the district, expressed her worry, as per CBS 8, stating, "It's just a concern that this, you know, the migrants are getting so comfortable. And, I don't know if it was a level of confusion. But to think that it's okay to get on a bus full of children is really scary."
Following these alarming events, Bystedt has enacted new safety measures, instructing bus drivers to drive past any stop where migrants are present. According to FOX 5, Families were advised to remain vigilant and, if necessary, to follow the bus to the next stop to pick up their children. These developments come as the local authorities, including the U.S. Border Patrol, California Highway Patrol, and San Diego County Sheriff's Department, are collaborating with the school district to address the issue and ensure the safety of students and school personnel.
Responding to the incidents, the Customs and Border Protection spokesperson stated in an official release, "The U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector is aware of two recent events involving migrant encounters near school bus stops along Highway 94 in East County San Diego." The spokesperson added, "Several individuals were taken into custody without incident for being illegally present in the United States. All individuals taken into custody were transported to nearby processing centers for enrollment in removal proceedings", as detailed by CBS 8.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent's letter to the families, which was made available through a public release, thanked the bus drivers and parents for acting promptly to secure the students' safety.
