A vegetation blaze in the Marinwood area early yesterday morning led to the apprehension of a San Rafael man after multiple agencies collaborated to squelch a fire that consumed around 18 acres, as confirmed by the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The fire, reported around 4:18 a.m., prompted responses from the Novato Fire District, San Rafael Fire Department, Marin County Fire Department, Cal Fire, and Marin County Parks, collectively extinguishing the potentially dangerous fire.
The Marin County Sheriff's investigation, along with the Marin County Fire Department and the Novato Police Department, swiftly zeroed in on Colin Crook, a 34-year-old male from San Rafael. As a potential suspect, authorities immediately dispatched patrol units to comb the area. They found Crook near the Safeway on Nave Dr. in Novato, where he was engaged by Novato PD officers and involved in a brief struggle before being detained for his supposed role in initiating the fire.
Upon interrogation, Crook confessed to igniting the blaze that destroyed his tent and personal effects, admitting to Marin County Sheriff's Deputies that he was acutely aware of the recklessness of his actions, his decision to vacate the premises driven by a desire to evade potential repercussions for his actions, "he knew starting the fire was reckless, but he chose to leave the area so he would not get in trouble," as stated in the Sheriff's Office release.
Ultimately, Crook was arrested and faced charges of Recklessly Starting Fire to Forest Land and Delay/Obstruct Police Officer and was booked at the Marin County Jail with bail set at a total of $12,000.
