After an exhaustive three-day search, local authorities have called off the operation for Gary Gushiken, a 50-year-old man from Līhu‘e, who went missing while snorkeling off Nukoli‘i Beach in Wailua. The Kaua‘i Police Department confirmed the suspension of the search late Tuesday evening.

Efforts to locate Gushiken were channeled through a substantial collaboration of local and federal agencies, including the Kaua‘i Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Ocean Safety Bureau among others. The search faced challenges, such as heightened surf and strong winds. "We are grateful for everyone's efforts in the search for Gary Gushiken, especially during the elevated surf and high wind conditions," Fire Chief Michael Gibson said, according to a statement obtained by the local press. Gibson added, "Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time."

The search for Gushiken commenced on Saturday, Aug. 24, after he was reported missing around 6:40 p.m. He was last seen roughly 100 yards from shore before becoming separated from his group. Over the course of three days, multiple agencies scoured the area by air, sea, and land in an attempt to find the missing snorkeler.

Following the suspension of the search, Assistant Chief Mark Ozaki of Kaua‘i Police Department shared his sentiments. "Our hearts go out to Gary’s family, friends, and loved ones," he said. Ozaki also expressed gratitude towards every units involved in the search. Community support for the Gushiken family was also evident, with volunteers from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, stepping in to offer their assistance.
