Seattle's young learners are about to get a head start. The Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) is now welcoming applications for children aged 3 and 4, as the 2024-2025 academic year is set to begin. An official August 8 release confirms that any child residing in Seattle and meeting the age requirement by the end of this month is eligible. Aiming to smoothly transition children into kindergarten, the SPP collaborates with various community organizations, Family Child Care providers, and Seattle Public Schools. Dual-language classrooms and extended day care options are among the features touted, along with specialized educators for students with behavioral or developmental challenges. Full details on the application process can be found at the City of Seattle's official website.
Understanding the diverse tapestry that composes Seattle, the SPP offers translated applications in up to eight languages, including Amharic and Vietnamese, at the same online destination. To easily assist non-English speaking families, the Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) can be reached either via a phone call or through the dedicated email address: [email protected]. SPP's tuition model adheres to a sliding scale, designed to accommodate every household. With the initiative aiming to fully include all citizens and based on household size and income, most families find themselves eligible for free or reduced rates. In fact, around 70 percent of the families currently pay nothing.
The DEEL has reportedly expanded the program's reach, adding 16 new classrooms to accommodate more students citywide. Seattle's commitment to accessible, high-quality preschool education is evident as it has nabbed a CityHealth gold medal for the second consecutive year. The upcoming school year is looking to be a substantial one with SPP intent on including 27 partner organizations that oversee 97 sites with a total of 151 classrooms, according to information released on August 8. This expansion will add 279 seats and boost the capacity to cater to roughly 2,500 children across the city.
To get a grasp on the real-world impact of this program, parents and guardians are encouraged to start the application process immediately to secure a spot for September classes.
