The Harris County Sheriff's Office reports another tragic discovery—a dead newborn was found in a ditch in front of a concrete industrial plant in north Houston. This heartbreaking incident, the second in less than a week involving an infant, occurred in the 15000 block of Henry Road near the Hardy Toll Road, according to ABC13.
Authorities were alerted to the scene around 2 p.m. by a lawn care crew who stumbled upon the newborn, partially clothed and laying on a blanket. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, who communicated the details via social media, chose not to reveal specifics about how the infant came to be in that location or information about the child's parents at this time.
Making reference to recent similar events, Major John Nanny of the HCSO East Region Patrol Bureau shed some light on the frequency of such occurrences. "There apparently has been somewhat of an epidemic on this lately," he said. Major Nanny also highlighted the importance of the Moses Law—an infant Safe Haven law—which allows parents to confidentially surrender their children at designated safe locations like EMS stations, fire departments, or hospitals without fear of prosecution, aiming to ensure child welfare, as detailed by ABC13.
The sheriff's office is concurrently investigating another case where a newborn's remains were discovered last Wednesday in a northwest Harris County subdivision—a situation where the mother allegedly disposed of her baby in a trash can. According to details released by FOX26 Houston, the mother recounted experiencing stomach pains and giving birth before fainting, only to find the baby unresponsive upon regaining consciousness. In a state of fear, she admitted to then discarding the newborn. The medical examiner's office has yet to confirm the cause of death for the infant found Tuesday.
