Early morning commuters on I-96 in Berlin Township were met with a fiery scene as two semi-trucks collided, leading to a blaze and a temporary blockage of the westbound lanes. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred around 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, when a 50-year-old Highland Park man driving one of the trucks fell asleep at the wheel, according to WOOD TV. The sleeping driver's semi veered off and struck another truck, driven by an Iowa man, which led to the Highland Park man's vehicle catching fire.
The ensuing fire engulfed the Highland Park driver's semi, but he managed to escape through the window, albeit sustaining burns in the process. He received prompt medical attention and was transported to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, as detailed by MLive. The driver from Iowa emerged from the incident unharmed and was reportedly able to drive away from the scene.
Various emergency service departments, including Michigan State Police, Life EMS, the Ionia County Road Commission, and local fire departments, were promptly at the scene to control the fire and facilitate a cleanup. The westbound lanes of I-96 were blocked while the authorities managed the aftermath of the crash, creating significant disruptions for traffic.
Investigators are looking into the incident further, but preliminary findings indicate that driver fatigue might have been the primary cause of this accident. "We’re told one of the semi drivers, a 50-year-old Wayne County man, fell asleep at the wheel and hit another semi. The other driver is a man from Iowa," reported FOX 17. The Wayne County man's recovery continues as he receives treatment for his burns, and the sheriff’s office has not released any additional details regarding potential citations or charges as of yet.
