A nearly four-decade-long investigation has culminated in the arrest of a Shelby woman for the alleged 1987 killing of her newborn child. Riverside Police Department in California, following an exhaustive process reignited by their Homicide Cold Case Unit, reported that DNA technology led them to 55-year-old Melissa Jean Allen Avila, as confirmed by QC News. Investigators found no evidence implicating the infant's father in the crime.
The happened on October 13, 1987, when a man searching for recyclables discovered the baby's body in a dumpster behind a business in Riverside. Despite early investigative efforts, the case staled until revived by new forensic avenues. As per WBTV, Avila, who was 19 at the time of incident, has been extradited and is currently held on $1.1 million bail.
Advances in DNA testing enabled the breakthrough in this unsolved case. "We very much appreciate the combined efforts of those in forensics who work with detectives in solving cold cases such as this one," Alan Barcelona, president of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association, as stated in remarks captured by WBTV.
Furthermore, Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez highlighted the determination of the police force. "Thanks to the persistent efforts of our investigators and partners, this victim now has an identity, bringing resolution to the case," he said according to a Fox News report. "We will remain dedicated to seeking justice for homicide victims and ensuring their families find closure." Avila's arraignment is scheduled for September 9.
