The sudden death of Tim Clarkson, a dedicated coach at Smithson Valley High School, has left students and staff in mourning. Clarkson, who served as a wrestling coach and economics teacher, passed away last Wednesday in his office after feeling unwell during water polo practice, as MySA reported.
His loss is felt deeply throughout the school, evident in the tributes from those who viewed him as more than just an educator. Hudson Chilton, a student on the wrestling team, said in a statement obtained by KENS 5, "This would have been my third year with him but it already felt like he wasn’t necessarily my coach, but like a fatherly figure." Alexis Avalos, another student athlete, remembers Clarkson as a straight-shooter who always encouraged the team to push themselves.
Sunday witnessed an outpouring of grief and remembrance at Bulverde Community Park where students gathered to share their memories and support each other. Clarkson, who had a 35-year career in education, notably secured multiple district championships and was recognized as the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association Class 5A Boys Coach of the Year just last year, which the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung highlighted.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was quickly established to support his family during this difficult time. Demonstrating the breadth of Clarkson's impact, over $5,000 was raised in less than 24 hours, Larry Hill, Smithson Valley Athletic Coordinator, claimed, in a GoFundMe organizer Nicole Pauley's words, Clarkson was "the pinnacle to Smithson Valley HS having a wrestling program." The campaign aims to cover funeral and memorial expenses, as noted on the GoFundMe page, with a sentiment emphasizing the community's desire to lessen the financial burden on the Clarkson family.
Counseling services have been made available at the school for all students affected, particularly those from the wrestling and water polo teams, as mentioned by Smithson Valley Principal Stacia Snyder, who requested the community's support in a letter following Clarkson's passing. Parents concerned about how their children are coping with the loss are encouraged to contact the school's counselors.
