Residents of Snellville who have ever been curious about the inner workings of their local police force now have the opportunity to get an insider's perspective. The Snellville Police Department is now accepting applicants for the 35th session of its Citizen's Police Academy. The program seeks to foster a better understanding and cooperation between the community and the law enforcement agency, as reported by the city's official news announcement.
The nine-week course is scheduled for Thursday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m., beginning on September 19, 2024, and concluding on November 7, 2024, with a break on October 31, 2024, to observe Halloween. Curriculum for the academy includes hands-on experiences such as traffic stops, building searches, and firearms safety. A particular highlight of program is a ride-along with an officer, providing participants a day-in-the-life experience of Snellville's police force.
Enrollment is open to all residents of the Snellville area who are at least 18 years old. Importantly, the academy is a free community service, and applicants are not required to live within the city limits to attend. Those interested should be prepared for a background check before their acceptance into the program can be confirmed.
Prospective participants can find the application on the city's website or pick up a copy at the Snellville Police Department located at 2315 Wisteria Drive. According to the city's announcement, completed applications must be notarized and returned by September 13, ahead of the starting date. However, space in the program is limited, so early application is recommended.
